Her Story
Shakema Edwards, the cherished and only child of Yvette Edwards and Andre Elkerson, graced the world with her presence on September 17, 1985, in Brooklyn, New York. Sadly, she passed away unexpectedly on January 6, 2024; this heart-wrenching loss leaves her family profoundly saddened.
In 2006, Shakema’s life became even more beautiful when she met Joelah Carter through a mutual friend, leading to a shared journey of building a life and family together with their two children, Shaniya & Kaliyah Edwards.
Shakema, an extraordinary mother and individual, embodied qualities such as unconditional love, strength of spirit, and boundless generosity. Her care extended not only to her immediate family but also reached her mother, grandmother, father, partner, children (including her bonus children), cousins, and countless others.
A spirited soul with a great number of passions, Shakema found comfort and peace in DIY hairstyles, expressing her incredible artistic talent. Pink was her favorite color, and the R&B music of Dru Hill, Mary J Blige and Usher brought her joy since childhood.
Professionally, Shakema worked as a School Aide at the Department of Education, most recently in the pupil department of the Brownsville School District. Known for her big heart and vibrant spirit, she welcomed everyone with open arms, an open heart, and a perpetual smile. Her passions included family, singing, and a deep connection to the natural world, approaching life with a spirit that surpassed expectations.
Shakema, a beautiful person inside and out, possessed a smile that could light up the whole room. Her profound care, kindness, and passion made a lasting impact on many lives. The shock and deep wound of her departure are keenly felt by her entire family and the wide network of community members who loved her deeply.
Her smile was something special – it could brighten up any room. Shakema’s care, kindness, and passion touched many lives.
