In the United States, homicide is one of the leading causes of death during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Many of these women were killed by intimate partners.
Maternal mortality is not only about hemorrhage, hypertension, or rare obstetric emergencies. It is also about whether a woman is safe at home. Whether she can leave. Whether she has transportation, financial independence, housing stability, social support, or someone willing to believe her when she says she is afraid.
