    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Dr. Gretchen Wenner Butler, 36, of Saint Paul, Minn., was a bright star who burned out too soon.  She unexpectedly died by suicide on March 5, 2021.

Gretchen Wenner was born on October 19, 1984, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the youngest of four children of Joseph and Mary (Legatt) Wenner. From an early age, Gretchen had an adventurous spirit. This spirit, combined with her boundless energy and many gifts, left those who met her with an unforgettable impression. She graduated from Saint John’s Preparatory School and the University of San Diego, where she excelled at both academics and athletics.

Her zest for life and positive energy made for many shared adventures with her family and friends. One adventure on the ski slopes of Colorado led to Gretchen meeting her match in Michael Butler. They married on June 18, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Cold Spring.

Gretchen earned her Doctor of Medicine from Creighton University’s School of Medicine in 2013 and completed her residency and fellowship in Radiology at the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and earned honors as Chief Resident, Teaching Resident of the Year and Radiology Resident of the Year.

Gretchen was employed at Hennepin Healthcare, where she loved her work and her patients. Gretchen’s work at Hennepin County Medical Center was particularly meaningful to her as it aligned with causes for which Gretchen advocated: Women’s health, accessibility to healthcare for all and meaningful relationships between physicians and patients.

Her strong work ethic, openness to other perspectives and eye for detail made Gretchen an excellent radiologist and an entertainer extraordinaire. The only thing better than having Gretchen attend your party was having her plan it! She made everything she did more beautiful and more fun with her infectious laugh and kind heart.

Gretchen was a doting daughter, a loving wife, a skilled physician, an elegant hostess and a generous friend. While she had many accomplishments and excelled at all of these roles, nothing made her more proud or brought her more joy than her three children. The void left in the lives of those who loved her is beyond words.

Gretchen is survived by her husband, Mike, and their children, Hudson, Harriet and Oliver; her parents, Dr. Joseph and Mary Wenner, and her siblings, Dr. Christopher (Jennifer) Wenner and Dr. Rachel (Ted) Ruzanic, all of Cold Spring, and Dr. Michelle (Paul) Chestovich of St. Paul; her in-laws, Bob and Marian Butler of Westford, Mass.; a brother-in-law, Rob Butler of Philadelphia; 11 loving nieces and nephews; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Radhika was a loving mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and medical doctor and was deeply loved by so many. She created communities around her and forged bonds that were truly deep, withstanding the boundaries of distance and time with friends, family, neighbors, classmates, colleagues, and patients. To know Radhika was to have someone who was unconditionally in your corner and to have a relationship that never faded. Her loss is mourned by her tribe across the globe from Vellore to Ramnee to St. Benedict’s and St. John’s to Stanford University to the University of Minnesota, her neighborhood, and her clinic in Minneapolis – we may even have missed a few in this list.

Radhika was born in New Delhi in 1982 and grew up in India. Radhika was born to give a daughter’s love to anyone who yearned for that connection. To her parents, Navin and Shafigeh, Radhika personified courage. She gave them the gift of strength that allowed them to build their lives dedicated to service and persist with their dreams for their family, no matter what challenges came their way.

Growing up, she excelled at everything she put her heart to and was the pride of her parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, teachers and her personal collection of godparents and campus parents who considered Radhika every bit their own. As a teenager, she became a natural leader, and while she had many followers, she was particularly adored by her two younger sisters, Tahireh and Tanya who loved and looked up to their ‘Didi’ and wanted to be everything she was – beautiful, intelligent, confident and fierce with her love.

She came to the United States for undergraduate studies at the College of Saint Benedict in 1999 and graduated college with a double major in Economics and Computer Science with the intent of supporting her sisters’ education. At college Radhika’s tribe only grew with friends, professors, mentors and host parents who gave her a new home in Minnesota. When she met Seth, her husband from this same tribe her connections to Minneapolis were cemented and it became her home. Roger, Joanne and the Snyder and Halloran families cherished and loved her, welcoming her with open arms.

Seth and Radhika went on to live their dreams, traveling the world, moving to the Bay Area for graduate school and growing their tribe to include the communities at Stanford and Radhika’s work. Despite her success at work, Radhika took a giant leap at age 28 and decided to start from scratch to pursue a career in medicine. It was a long and intense journey, from taking pre-med science classes, completing research internships, applying and interviewing at multiple medical schools across the country. She was rewarded with a spot in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota where Seth also enrolled for his doctorate in education. In 2012, Radhika and Seth were blessed with their beloved daughter and together over the next few years the three of them earned a PhD, an MD and a preschool diploma with the support of family, friends and their ever-growing tribe.

Radhika became a doctor to help and serve the community, and chose to specialize in family and maternal health in the community where she lived. Her tribe grew to include her residency classmates, colleagues and staff at her clinics who had the great privilege of seeing Radhika at her finest, in service and living the dream she had worked so hard for.

Seth and Radhika were blessed with a son in April this year and in the 10 weeks they had together as a family of four, they were complete. Their joy and happiness was felt and celebrated across the globe, across their tribe.

Radhika was exceptional and achieved so much in the face of her struggle with the postpartum depression and psychosis that took her life suddenly. As her family and friends deal with their profound grief, we also want to celebrate her life and everything she accomplished. As we keep her memories alive, may her tribe continue to grow and nurture her children.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

    Her Story

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]

Maria “Masha” Pike was born in Tver Ostashkov Russia on February 19, 1990. She was adopted by Tom Pike and Lynne Pike in December 1996. Masha was excited to be an “American girl,” and the following year she was sworn in as an American citizen in Memphis, Tennessee.

Maria loved life, the beauty of nature, and the wonders of this earth. As a child, she enjoyed hiking and camping with her dad and walking barefoot in the grass and through the woods. She loved to sew and crochet with her mom, as well as reading books and learning from scripture. She was active in 4-H and Girl Scouts, played in recitals, competitions, and weddings and won many awards in the county fair in several categories, particularly for her exceptional artistic talent. Earning an associate degree in Horticulture at Brigham Young University in Utah, Maria often participated in gardening and landscaping projects.

Caring for her newborn daughter was Maria’s highest priority, as her partner Mitchell and her friends observed. She kept a clean home for Destinii and only dressed her in 100% cotton and other natural fibers. She encouraged others to handle her baby gently and was cautious about who held and cared for Destinii. She loved to cook and, proud of her Russian heritage, she often prepared Russian foods, including borscht and pierogi. She was particular about the foods she ate, especially while pregnant, placing high priority on fresh produce and unprocessed foods. She only wanted the best for her daughter and her partner Mitchell.

Maria’s spirit, her smile, and her laughter will be sorely missed by those who knew her well and dearly loved her.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]
