    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Mother, Friend and Philanthropist, Catherine (Kit) Lai, age 37, died suddenly from cardiac arrest. Mother and the unborn child she was carrying passed peacefully together, surrounded by loved ones.

Kit was born on October 1, 1979 in Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago to David Lai a retired architect and hospital administrator, and Maureen Lai, a retired teacher and counselor from the Chicago public school system.

She is survived by both parents, her brother Brendan, as well as the love of her life, her husband, John (JD) Darcy, and her beloved son Dashiell, age two.

Kit grew up in the near southwest side of Chicago and attended Whitney Young high school. She majored in psychology at Vassar College, and was an active member of the school’s volleyball team. Kit’s professional career in the beauty industry began immediately after college. Prior to joining L’Oreal USA, Kit built a thriving and dynamic career in the beauty industry with integral roles at Behrman Communications, Translation, TLCommunications, and COTY.

After four pivotal years at Lancome, Kit was recently promoted to the Vice President of Global Communications & Digital for the L’Oreal prestige fragrance house, Atelier Cologne. Kit’s husband, JD, is also a member of the L’Oreal family, where he works in marketing on the Kiehl’s Since 1851 brand. Their shared interest in the beauty industry was, of course, only one of the many passions that fueled the powerful flame of this wonderful couple’s 13-year love story.

Kit was a long-time supporter of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During her tenure at Lancome she tirelessly contributed to their long-standing corporate partnership to find cures and save children. Kit may have found her way to St. Jude via her position at Lancome, but her work for them was a direct result of her personal commitment. “Kit’s passion for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was profound. Whether she was providing life-changing moments at St. Jude for our patients, beauty influencers or Lancome associates or participating in St. Jude events throughout the country, Kit always brought beauty and happiness to our patients and their families during times when they needed it most,” said Richard Shadyac, Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “Kit is leaving behind an amazing legacy of love and service that reminds us all of the tremendous difference one person can make in the lives of many.”

Kit was a devoted mother, wife, daughter, friend, professional, and philanthropist. She always jumped at the chance to host gatherings of loved ones. She loved art, museums, visits to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and was an active supporter of her community Park Slope Food Co-Op. Her selflessness, humor, intelligence, and compassion make her loss, in her life’s prime, devastating to all those who were touched by her. She brought beauty to the world, and made those around her better for knowing her.

JD, Dash, and family are humbled and deeply thankful for the overwhelming support and love they have been shown through this difficult time. The outpouring of sympathy by those whose lives have been touched by Kit has moved them beyond words, and their gratitude is beyond expression.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Maranatha Eileen Lougheed on July 20th, 2018 at just 39 years of age. Maran suffered a catastrophic intracranial hemorrhage two days after delivering her third son and, unfortunately, deteriorated shortly thereafter. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her family, who adored her.

Maran is survived by her loving husband, Cory Kilpatrick, and her three beautiful boys, Brycen (age 4), Benton (age 2), and newborn baby Braedan. She also leaves behind a large immediate family, including her parents, Eileen and Brandon Lougheed, and siblings, Daryl (Natalie), Ronan (April), Charetina (David), Taylor (Vanessa), and Justan; as well as her mother- and father-in-law, Rick and Karen Kilpatrick; and her nieces and nephews, Maeve, Bramwell, Harrison, Sullivan, and Willa.

Maran, also known affectionately as “Marn,” “Mare,” or simply “M,” was an incredible woman, filled with such life and laughter. She was born on May 23, 1979 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and immediately began leaving her indelible mark on the lives of everyone she encountered. Always ready with a quick smile or a witty joke, she was loved by all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

An amazing athlete and especially talented swimmer, her career took her from Markham Aquatic Swim Club to Seton Hall University in New Jersey on a swim scholarship, where she made lifelong friends in the pool. She subsequently completed her medical training through Saint George’s University in Grenada and her medical residency at Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey.

Her career began in Rhode Island, where she met her husband, Cory, and they started their life together in Big Flats, New York. Maran expertly cared for thousands of patients, and was well-respected and admired by her many colleagues as an outstanding physician and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Guthrie Corning Hospital. She dedicated her life to bringing babies into the world, saving the lives of young mothers, and offering comfort and healthcare support to women of all ages. She did this not only through medical intervention, but also by demonstrating exemplary compassion and a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to help those in need.

Maran’s commitment to her work in women’s health was second only to her dedication to her family. She worked tirelessly to create a happy home, and provided enriching experiences, along with a loving, magical childhood for her children. Maran had big dreams for her little boys, and their well-being was of the utmost importance to her. Although she was not able to communicate it, her family knows that her dying wish would have been for her children to be loved and cared for, and that they each be given the opportunity to become the best versions of themselves – as she strove to do in her own life.

Even on her final day, Maran continued to give. As per her wishes, her organs were donated to those in dire need, allowing her to save many lives despite losing her own. Maran was, simply put, an incredible person. Her passing has left a void that will never be filled.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

She married Daniel R. Scheffer on June 11, 2005. They lived in Easthampton, MA until 2013 when they moved to Montauk, NY, shortly after the birth of their son Coen, to care for Daniel’s grandfather Robert T. Schorr, who had lost his wife Charlotte to cancer.

Deb is survived by her husband Daniel and two children, Coen and Benjamin; both of her parents; her brother Ted Kuracz, Jr., his wife Vicki, and their children Brian and Matt of Windsor Locks, CT; her brother Michael Kuracz, his wife Tina, and their children Austin and Alayna of Windsor Locks, CT; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Deb was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was a stay at home mom that loved her child and husband enormously and was looking forward to welcoming another child into their lives.

For those that had the pleasure of knowing Deb, behind her quiet demeanor she was immensely thoughtful, kind, chill, and hilarious.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]
