    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Brittany Kaye Long, 37 years, passed away on February 28, 2024 due to birth complications, after the loss of her fifth child, Joy Magnolia.

Brittany was born on December 19th, 1986 in Richmond, VA to Phillip Leon Cifers and Darlene Renee Lowery. After Brittany graduated from Prince George Highschool in 2005, she married Joey Long and went on to study nursing at John Tyler Community College and later a bachelor’s degree at Grand Canyon University.

Brittany worked in many roles in the medical field but her heart was in hospice care. She was a compassionate and Godly woman who touched all that met her.  Her favorite place she worked was Carolina East Endoscopy department in New Bern, NC.

Brittany was always a joy in everyone’s life and always tried her hardest to make someone’s day. She loved the beach and went there as much as possible in the summer, and also loved the mountains and made sure to take an annual trip there with her family. Brittany always dreamed of being a bee-keeper and wanted to run her own florist shop. She loved flowers and had many around her house. Brittany was also an amazing singer, and even after many years she still knew her way on a piano.  Brittany also dove deep into the word of the God, and she loved praising and worshipping the Lord Jesus through singing, praying, and reading and studying the Bible.

Brittany is survived by her husband Joey, her four children Kylie, Isaac, Sophia, and Zachary, her father and mother Bobby and Darlene, and her two sisters Lindsay and Erica Harris. Brittany will be deeply missed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Catherine Treece Metzger, 37, of Fayetteville, NC, died peacefully on June 10, 2022, surrounded by family at the Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC, after a prolonged battle following a severe pregnancy complication.

Catherine is survived by her loving and beloved husband, Clayton Blough, of Fayetteville, NC, and her nine-month-old daughter, Catherine Margaret “Maggie” Metzger Blough.

In addition, Catherine is survived by her father, Keene Metzger of Cambridge, MA; her brother, Tell (Bonnie Campbell) Metzger of Brooklyn, NY; her stepmothers Nancy Moorehead of Cambridge, MA, and Barbara Kleeman of Arlington, MA; her mother-in-law, Cheri (Barry) Voss of Texas and Moyock, NC; her aunt, Donna Treece of Chestnut Hill, MA; her cousin, Irene Jacobson of Somerville, MA; her sister-in-law, Caitlin (Mary Shoulders) Blough of Moyock, NC, all of whom spent many days accompanying Catherine on her long, final journey.

In addition, there are many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins in the Boston area and throughout the country. Catherine’s mother, Margaret Treece Metzger predeceased her in 2013.

Catherine was born in Seoul, Korea, on March 9, 1985, and was adopted by Keene and Margaret. She was raised in Cambridge, MA, surrounded by friends in a loving community known as Common Place and by members of Old Cambridge Baptist Church. Catherine graduated from Brookline High School in MA in 2003, where her mother taught English for many years. She spent a post-graduate year at Tilton Academy in NH, and graduated from New England College also in NH, in 2008.

In 2013 Catherine joined the U.S. Army and served for over 6 years, primarily at NATO Headquarters in Belgium and at JBER in Anchorage, Alaska. She received two Army Commendation Awards during her service, and earned the Arctic Patch during her tour in Alaska. Following her discharge at the rank of Sergeant she moved to Fayetteville to join Clayton, also an Army veteran, who had been at Ft. Bragg.

Catherine was a natural athlete who excelled in every sport. She most loved ice hockey, which she played into college. In high school she was team captain and a Boston Globe All-Scholastic her senior year. Catherine was quiet but had a wonderful, playful, and incisive sense of humor. She was acutely observant of her surroundings, on which she loved to comment. Her Dad relied on her to tell him what just happened in movies and at sporting events. She loved good food, especially a good steak; Christmas and the holiday roast; celebrating her arrival day in the US on December 2, 1986, at 21 months old; her family, friends and cousins; and gaming. Following her discharge from the Army with 100% disability she took up gaming in a serious way. (She could always win at any board game!) She made a mean Cincinnati Chili and rib roast. Her Dad would bring a favorite sub sandwich from Boston to her Durham hospital.

Her marriage to Clayton in April, 2018, brought her into a whole big, new family, which she loved being a part of. Catherine had a special soft spot for rescue animals. At one time she and Clayton had nine rescue cats and three rescue dogs. Even while hospitalized, she urged Clayton to keep and care for them. She looked forward to coming home to them.

On September 21, 2021, Catherine gave birth to Maggie at 26 weeks via c-section. Maggie then spent two months in the extraordinary NICU at the Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville. Maggie, along with Clayton, was Catherine’s joy.

The rare pregnancy complication was diagnosed as HELLP Syndrome. Catherine spent the final nine months of her life after Maggie’s birth under the exceptional and loving care of the team at the Duke Medical Center, to which she was airlifted shortly after Maggie’s birth. It was a roller coaster of good days and bad days, being on and off renal dialysis; her liver working and not working; her gastric system working and not working; fluid building up and being removed; intermittent breathing support; bouts of delirium; and various random infections, all punctuated by excruciating back pain from her military service. Eventually her body gave out. But only after a long, determined fight. Through it all, Catherine was heroic. She was patient, resilient, gracious, grateful to her caregivers, in good humor and spirits, and optimistic about the eventual outcome. Buoyed above all by visits from family, especially Clayton and Maggie, the loves of her life, she never once complained. All she wanted was to return home to them and live the life she hoped for, to see Maggie’s first steps, to be a mother for the first time. In the end, which came quickly and unexpectedly after what appeared to be marked improvement, that was not to be.

Catherine wanted very much to be able to tell her story, to be sure the risks women take in pregnancy are better understood. The family hopes to carry out that wish.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]

    Her Story

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Our bright light, Martha Weldon Lummus, died bravely and suddenly on December 23, 2025, from complications following the birth of her second child, a healthy baby boy. She was thirty-four years old.

Weldon was foremost a loving wife and mother, but also a treasured daughter, sister, friend, colleague, and outstanding therapist. Each stage of her life was marked by a deep commitment to family, friends, the well-being of others, integrity, boundless curiosity, and accomplishment. She showed up. She paid attention. She loved with intention. These qualities shaped every relationship she held and will be remembered by all who knew her.

Weldon and her twin sister Elizabeth were born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 15, 1991, a joyful day. She attended Morris Brandon Elementary School and graduated from The Westminster Schools. She then graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University, where she served as the Honor Council Co-Chair. She was a corps member for Teach For America, during which time she earned a Master of Education in Instructional Practice. She later earned a Master of Social Work at Columbia University, where she trained in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Training and Implementation Lab to build her skills for the integration of theory and clinical practice.

Weldon and her husband Teddy met at Georgetown and began dating during their senior year. They were devoted and thoughtful partners, with a marriage grounded in mutual respect, quiet loyalty, and a shared sense of joy and ease. Weldon loved Teddy in ways that were practical and generous, through attentiveness, shared responsibility, and confidence in the life they were building together.

As a mother, Weldon was deliberate and unfailingly present. She prepared carefully, learned relentlessly, and met the work of parenting with joy and tenderness. From the moment her sons entered the world, they were anchored by her steadiness and devotion. The life Weldon and Teddy built together has been a wonder to behold, marked by contentment, laughter, and peace, especially in the years after their son Curran was born – years that many observed were the happiest of Weldon’s life. She looked forward to nurturing Joe with the same unconditional love.

As a daughter and sister, Weldon carried forward the values with which she was raised – compassion, loyalty, curiosity, and a strong moral compass. As the eldest child (by two minutes), she took her role seriously – decisive, calm, and quietly in charge. She offered a presence that made the people around her feel safe to follow. To her twin sister, she was captain and companion, someone to trust, lean on, and come home to; their lives were intertwined not just by birth, but by a shared language and way of understanding the world. To her younger brother, Will, she was fiercely protective and dedicated, watching over him, challenging him when needed, and believing in him with a quiet confidence that did not waver.

Weldon was an extraordinary friend. She formed friendships that were deep and enduring and gave herself fully. She listened carefully, asked thoughtful questions, and stayed present through seasons of change, joy, and uncertainty. With friends, she balanced her natural reserve with a sharp sense of humor and fun and a love for shared rituals – long conversations, book clubs, and karaoke nights. Making Weldon laugh was, for family and friends, one of life’s most satisfying joys.

As a therapist, Weldon was a practitioner of the highest order, advancing evidence-based practice with a rare blend of clinical rigor and empathy. From the early stages of her career, she had an uncanny ability to truly listen and a relentless focus and dedication to her patients’ healing.

Weldon was exceptionally intelligent and profoundly curious. She read voraciously and was drawn to spaces of culture, history, and the arts where ideas were meant to be shared and examined together. At Georgetown, she majored in American Studies, an interdisciplinary field grounded in dialogue, community, and cultural inquiry. Learning, for Weldon, was pursued seriously, with warmth, humor, and connection to the people around her.

Weldon is survived by her husband, Teddy Burke; their sons, Curran and Joe; her parents, Pat and Bill Lummus; her twin sister, Elizabeth Lummus; her brother, Will Lummus; her grandparents, Martha and Bob Erwin; Teddy’s parents, Nancy and Tim; Teddy’s twin brother, Patrick, and his wife, Heidi, and their son, Callum; his older brother, Andrew, and younger brother, Timmy. Weldon and Teddy are blessed with large and boisterous families who loved Weldon dearly – grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Dr. William Lummus and his wife Anne.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text css=”” el_class=”profile-links-header”]
