Born on Aug. 28, 1982, in Waterville, Maine, she was the daughter of Gregory and Gisele (Fortin) Richards. She attended elementary school in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 2001. She went on to graduate from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., in 2005, with a bachelor’s of art degree in philosophy.
